I got this idea from this cute blog: http://jhsmith88.tumblr.com/post/25449246805/i-think-im-going-to-start-craft-blogging and made it for a white elephant at a holiday party. It's a great idea if you have a bunch of extra scrapbook paper laying around and the materials were cheap.

Few pieces of advice:
  • Don't put thick layers of mod podge; if it's too thick it dries white instead of clear and smooth
  • Glue the edges down well. The blog where I got this idea from says you only need a few dabs, but I tried that and the edges of the petals kept getting folded over and messed up when I applied the mod podge
  • The original blog post with this idea doesn't say how much mod podge you need so I bought the big expensive bottle, but the small cheaper one (~$5) will be enough

Materials pre-paint

Wait for the acrylic to dry before gluing down pieces

Petals. Try to stick to a general color combination or theme

Post-mod podge application (it will dry clear as long as you put this thin of a layer)

My friend (http://littlepiecesofbliss.wordpress.com) recommended this adorable DIY idea: http://www.lemonjitters.com/2012/10/diy-patterned-heart-tights.html, and it turned out fantastic!

A few pieces of advice:
  • You don't need adhesive vinyl. We spent quite a bit of time trying to find some to no avail. As long as you use good cardstock and hold the stencils down hard when you paint, you'll be fine
  • Acrylic paint is permanent, so be careful
  • Don't forget what I did and remember that if you're doing a special pattern, there will be room on the tights you need to leave for your feet. I wanted to do a pattern with a lot of hearts on the bottom and then fading as you moved upward, but I bunched a lot of the hearts at the feet that you won't be able to see unless I'm not wearing shoes (scroll down to see what I'm talking about)
PS- sorry for the poor photo quality!

Try to avoid patterns on the foot area

I realized I never finished posting all of the pages from my scrapbook I did for a school organization earlier this year, so without further ado, I present the picnic page!

I love the summertime feel to this page

The sun rays are half-flowers. The clouds were hand drawn and the lettering is rubber stamps with waterpad ink and I then embossed clear powder onto them. I don't use the clear powder very often, but it does leave a subtle effect

I take my chocolate chip cookies very seriously. A recipe boasting perfection takes on quite a burden and a mental note of "we'll see about that" from yours truly.

I tried Emily's recipe for chocolate chip cookies from her book (here: http://www.amazon.com/Cupcakes-Cashmere-Defining-Reinventing-Entertaining/dp/1419702106/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334164387&sr=1-1).

Sorry I'm not able to post the recipe on here, but I can put some general tips besides the directions. When the recipe claimed things like "wait until butter and eggs are room temperature and do not microwave them to make them room temperature", I thought that was a little ridiculous. I'm not sure if that's what did it, but these cookies did have a certain softness. Also, the recipe called for "over 50% cacao chocolate chips" which were a challenge to find. I later realized that these chips were way too bitter for my taste, so in the future I will stick to milk chocolate chips.

Lastly, and I recommend this for no matter what recipe for chocolate chip cookies you use, placing the cookie dough in the fridge for an hour before baking instead of baking as soon as you make the cookie dough is, in my opinion, what made these cookies so good. Letting them sit and cool allows the flavors to mix well.

I'm a big fan of trying to keep as many chemicals as possible out of anything I use. Sometimes it's hard to find quality, inexpensive things that fit this limited group of healthy/organic/preservative-free/chemical-free things, but Lush makes it much easier. Here's two of my favorite recent purchases:

"Shine So Bright" split end treatment. Split ends can't ever technically be treated, but this product is great for dry hair. Cold weather takes the frizz out of my hair, but it often leaves it unmoisturized and generally unappealing. This tiny tin works wonders! Literally take as much as you would lip balm for your lips, and apply to the dry parts of your hair. Within minutes my hair felt so soft. My only warning is don't apply near the scalp. The ingredients are nearly all oils and your scalp will get really greasy.

"It Started With A Kiss" lip tint. This was a last-minute grab as I was paying at the counter. Unfortunately I find my self dehydrated often and so my complexion isn't fantastic. This awesome lip tint that also doubles as cheek stain instantly lifts my complexion as it adds subtle color. It is very concentrated, so I suggest using a small amount. The consistency/texture is also kind of grainy which I didn't mind but may be a turn-off to some.

Both of these products were reasonable prices for the amount and how long they will last, so I will definitely be adding them to my list of essentials.

Thanksgiving is usually the one time a year you will find me in the kitchen for more than 20 mins. Kidding, (kind of), but I do take the holiday and meal pretty seriously. I try to make whatever I can from scratch and constantly consult foodnetwork.com for all of my recipes (my dad likes to make fun of my lack of skills, but the perfect mashed potatoes really do require a perfect recipe).

Unfortunately I had some studying to do this break which was a pretty big buzzkill, but I took time off to make my two favorites- garlic mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

For the cranberry sauce, I used part of this recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alexandra-guarnaschelli/cranberry-sauce-recipe/index.html. I say parts because due to a lack of time and partially just plain laziness,  I didn't follow this recipe exactly. I skipped over the nutmeg, allspice, and orange zest. Additionally, I felt that the sugar was a little too much so I just eyeballed what I thought would be enough. Lastly, I added some orange juice at the very end (~ 2 tbsp) just to keep the sauce from congealing and add a little extra flavor. Making your own cranberry sauce is one of the simplest and quickest things to do on Thanksgiving. It literally prepares itself, and the reward is so much better than canned sauce.

As for the mashed potatoes, I just have one piece of advice: never tell a man to do a womans job, including making a very precise grocery list and then expecting exactly what is on the list to be purchased. Because of the odd mix of ingredients I ended up with, I had to combine these two recipes:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/anne-burrell/garlic-yukon-gold-mashed-potatoes-recipe/index.html and http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/creamy-garlic-mashed-potatoes-recipe/index.html

As with the cranberry sauce, I left out a few ingredients I thought were too time consuming (like using garlic powder to taste instead of mashing garlic cloves). I diced the golden potatoes and cooked them for about 30 minutes. In a separate pot, I mixed the half and half with herbs and garlic powder. After the potatoes were done, I combined the half and half with the potatoes and mashed. To top it off, I added some freshly grated parmesan cheese. It's important to freshly grate the cheese from a block instead of using shredded parmesan cheese because there is a wax coating on the shredded kind that results in it never ever melting unless you put it in the over. Weird and annoying, I know.

Boiling

Mashed and ready to eat!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

I tried to find the link to these online, but I couldn't find anything. I just bought these cute little 4" x 6" lined notebooks that come in a pack of 3 from Target. They come in 3 different colors with shiny gold polka dots and a quote on each one. I wanted to buy a Moleskine journal for noting down the medical pearls of wisdom my preceptor gives to me when I'm shadowing him, but I couldn't resist these notebooks.  And they're so much cheaper than a Moleskine- the pack was $4!

Sorry for the bad picture quality, but the quotes are: "Joy delights in joy" -William Shakespeare, "looking at the stars always makes me dream" -Vincent Van Gogh, and "Happiness is a bright shiny thing"

I bought these two things (one of which is not jewelry) at a boutique called "South Moon Under"

A golden octopus charm. I still need to find a golden chain, but at the same time, I kind of like the silver and gold together.

Hair ties- the salesperson at the boutique told me these don't leave creases in your hair, and they really don't.

If you want to skip the sight-seeing and stereotypically touristy things to do in NYC, I suggest doing some major shopping. One place I would highly recommend for jewelry is the jewelery/earring district located at around 31st-32nd and Broadway. There's basically rows and rows of stores selling really inexpensive jewelery.

A quick photo of the inside of a wholesale jewelry store

While one would expect that with all of this selection I would be buying loads of things, I am (fortunately?) very picky about jewelery. Also, I had to make sure everything fit in my suitcase (sadly). Here's my two favorite pieces I got from shopping in the Jewelry District:

After being quite exhausted from my travels, I decided to sleep in today. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, but fortunately, it was for a very exciting reason- my doorbell rang because the book "Cupcakes and Cashmere: a guide for defining your style, reinventing your space, and entertaining with ease" had finally arrived!

Image from www.amazon.com

I've only skimmed through it and it seems to be an essential guide to life basically (maybe a little dramatic). And it's pretty rainy and dreary today, so what better way to spend a day indoors than with tea and this awesome book.

Also, the author commented on my Facebook post, which only made my morning even better!

On my trip, my cousin and I went walking around Boston and one of stores I had to visit was a place called "Paper Source". There is one location relatively close to where I live, so I plan on making this one of my regular obsessions. This visit was my first experience, and I immediately fell in love.

I saw a simple decorating idea on pintrest months ago when I got really bored of schoolwork and instead thought of ways to decorate my bedroom.

The idea involved framing different patterns of scrapbook paper and hanging up a collection of frames in an area on a wall. It's super easy and if your bedroom color scheme changes, it's really easy and cheap to just buy new paper. The only semi-costly part would be the frames, but with the clearance rack at Ross (my new favorite hidden gem) and coupons for various craft stores (can be found online, just Google), it's doable, quick, and inexpensive.

My cousin introduced my to an awesome company called "The Paper Source". Unfortunately, I have yet to visit the store closest to me, so I just marvel at the website for now- http://www.paper-source.com

I apologize for being slightly off schedule this week with my posts. Quite a few people have told me I should sleep as much as I can and watch TV as much as possible to get it all out of my system before school starts, so I am trying to do just that!

Here's a page out of my scrapbook I made for a group lunch:

I handmade the burger and fries! Everything is cardstock except for the cheese and fries. I used a white pen to outline the tomato details to give it a little extra something. So much better than paying $5 for these at a craft store, just takes 10 minutes!

I have been making a bunch of graduation cards lately!

Here's one I made this weekend for another friend who just graduated high school.

I love polka dots

New glittery clear embossing powder I bought recently. Unfortunately, I didn't know it was clear and thought it would be white and glittery. But, it's still pretty!

The end product! I used the embossing powder to better outline the graduation cap (tassel is sticker I cut). The lettering is embossed silver lettering. The red polka dotted paper is cardstock.

I bought this flower shaped bowl off the clearance rack at Ross for $1.49. It's the perfect size to store jewelry and I love the shape/design. The side has little ridges, and as soon as I bought this, I immediately decided to do something extra with it to match the rest of my bedroom.

I used silver nail polish (Revlon's "Silver Dollar") to paint streaks vertically along the ridges.

The finished product! It's something a little more fun than just a plain white bowl. Best of all, it took less than 10 minutes to do and dry and can be done to anything!
