blue gems

When it comes to art, I would say that 100% of the time, the way I imagine the piece turning out is not how it turns out. Although it sounds frustrating, it's actually one of my favorite things about creating something. It starts with an idea, and then the process takes you where it wants to take you- kind of like being in therapy. Art is a conversation, and you don't know where it will take you. This piece was of course no exception.

This 3' x 4' canvas is a challenge to fill. With such a large area available, the infinite blankness is intimidating. I knew I wanted to incorporate gem shapes and that was about it. Using a marker and ruler, I began sketching out various gem shapes and kept going. While I was planning to fill the entire canvas with gems, my impatience got the best of me and I eventually gave up, deciding it was time to start painting. I stuck to a theme of blues, although my original plan had been a rainbow of colors.

Coming up with multiple shades of blues was a bigger challenge than anticipated. After the gems, I filled in the background with a light, contrasting color to make the gems pop. As a finishing touch, I outlined the gems in black to make them stand out even more.
