DIY clay macaron photo holder

Monday, October 9, 2017

These DIY clay macaron photo holders are a fun way to display photos (or in the above case, postcards) that add a pop of color to your display. Although fair warning- it may lead to you going out to get actual macarons.

Here's what I used to create the photo holders:
Acrylic paint (colors of your choosing, but make sure you have white)
A paint brush or sponge
Plastic fork

Start out by molding the top and bottom of your macaron (perfectly reasonable to have a real macaron beside you as a guide/snack). DAS air hardening clay is a great basic clay to use. It's a good consistency and easy to mold, and hardens within 24-48 hours. To smooth out any cracks, I dipped my finger in water and was able to brush away any imperfections.

Next, to create the feet of the macarons, use a plastic fork and lightly stipple the middle edges of the top and bottom pieces. The top piece will have a slightly thicker band of feet than the bottom piece to create a more realistic macaron.

To finish molding your macaron, create the filling and sandwich it between your two pieces. After my macaron dried, I realized the pieces weren't sticking together well. To try to prevent that from happening, lightly brush water on the surface of your filling before sandwiching it in.

Lastly, stick the wire right into the center of the macaron. Let the entire thing dry for 24-48 hours. After the first 24 hours, you'll need to lay it on it's side to let the bottom dry as well.

Once your macaron is dry, paint it with the acrylic paint. I used white with the paints to create a lighter color for the filling, although you could use any color combination. Once the acrylic paint is dry, brush about 2 coats of Mod Podge over the macarons (for shine) and let it dry for a few hours.

Place your photos/cards on the holders, and try not to eat the macarons!
