DIY flower wall

Sunday, September 24, 2017

H refers to this project as the "art installation" in our apartment. While I feel it's a stretch to call it such, it is a bit of something I've never done before. I've seen flower walls on Instagram with what I presume to be real, fresh flowers and dried flowers. While using either of the two for a flower wall makes for beautiful decor, the idea of staining the walls of our rental apartment quickly nipped that idea in the bud (pun intended). Instead, I created this DIY flower wall in our guest/study room using artificial flowers and washi tape. The result was better than I had hoped, and I'm so glad I finally got around to getting rid of atleast some of the negative space in that room.

After we accidentally flooded our apartment after we nailed into the (PVC pipe) sprinkler system earlier this Spring, neither H nor I have wanted to risk putting anything else up in our apartment that involves nails longer than maybe a push pin. Using just washi tape for this project is definitely a huge plus. Washi tape is a lot like masking tape, and when removed, doesn't leave a mark. This of course, makes it ideal for home decor (especially in a rental).

I went with a red/white flower theme, but I think a pale, pastel color theme would also look beautiful. I happened to find bunches of artificial flowers on sale at Michaels that were mostly red. I included one bunch of fern leaves, but I do wish I had bought more greenery- it ended up creating a nice balance against the red. Lastly, I went with a pack of varying gold washi tapes for sticking the stems to the wall.

Although I included heavier tape in the picture, the washi tape was strong enough that I didn't need to use it. Also, I tried to use regular scissors to cut the artificial flowers- bad idea. I ended up damaging the scissors because of the wiring in the flowers. You will need wire cutters for this project!

I opted to fill the space above our desk. That entire wall is completely empty, so there was plenty of space to put up the flowers here and have it be a focal point in the room.

I started with putting one straight line of flowers down about the middle of the desk as sort of a starting point. Then I alternated adding lines of flowers on each side. I used about 7-8 stems per line, and tried to keep the types and colors of flowers varied.

If you're more interested in doing your own DIY flower wall as more of a temporary piece, I think it would make for a great photo backdrop or party decor. I also think this would make for a great inexpensive and easy dorm DIY that wouldn't risk breaking any dorm rules!
