a place to sit among a plethora of plants

After a long (too long) break from colored pencils, I bought a fresh set of Prismacolor colored pencils about a year ago. The next task was to find the perfect picture to sketch, which was really difficult. I wanted to find something detailed that would be a fun challenge to sketch with vibrant colors. I immediately saved this photo I found on Instagram with sketching it out in mind.

I started by very roughly sketching out the drawing at a 1:1 ratio on a piece of black cardstock paper. Gridding the paper and approaching it one square at a time is this only way I can manage such a detailed piece- otherwise, I run the risk of missing details and getting sizing/shaping wrong. As I sketched, I colored in. Although the picture had more to it that what I ended up sketching out, I stopped where I did because I honestly got worn out by the detail. To take advantage of the vibrant colors that the black paper helped bring out, I used an X-Acto knife to cut out the drawing. Next came the background. To mimic the sunlight that was in the original picture, I went with light pastel sunlight colors in warm, circular patterns. I used acrylic paint on a 12 x 12 canvas and finished by delicately sticking down the drawing.

Although I am done with the piece, there is a part of me that wants to put an antique gold frame around the piece. To be decided.
