style breakdown: murakami at the modern art museum of ft. worth

Wednesday, August 8, 2018

After much deliberation, I have decided (with the help of an Instagram poll), to start a sartorial section on the blog! I was, and have been, conflicted for some time about whether or not to add a style section to the blog. There's a lot of things I wanted to consider if I did decide to pursue it, and I want to briefly explain them on here as I add this part to the blog.

Things I want to do here:

- A sartorial diary for mainly me: Style always has brought me joy. For those of us with the privilege and luxury to be able to choose the clothes we choose to wear and have style be a hobby, fashion is a form of artistic and individual expression. For times in my life when being able to decide what I want to wear was not as accessible as it is now, flipping through the September Vogue issue would more than suffice. Documenting style is like documenting art for me.

- Share the love: What better way to show your love of something than to share it with others?

- Map out my style: Part of sharing the love of fashion goes beyond just photos. I want to breakdown and map out my style- explain it in parts to help illustrate cohesion as well as the intentionality behind my sartorial choices. Each part of the whole was put together to create a certain flow!

Things I want to avoid here:

- Free advertising: This is not going to be an opportunity for me to list out "what I'm wearing" and where I purchased these pieces. There will be no linking of where to buy stuff, and no pricing. To me, style is something that can and should exist without cost and branding being an issue. The name and cost of an item is not what makes style- it's about the unique pairing and assembling of pieces that, when put together, create and express something individualistic. Also, I am against "tagging" brands and links because this essentially equates to free advertising for mostly large corporations, which is something I have no reason or desire to engage in. The exception to this will be local and/or small businesses.

-"Curated" shots: There will be no regular "schedule" for sartorial posts, just as there isn't one for the rest of my blog. These photos will not be planned out ahead of time (ie, no "photo shoots" consisting of hundreds of shots), and I have no plan to create outfits solely for the sake of having something to post on the blog.

- Being too serious: Self-explanatory, I think.

With some detailing out of the way, I wanted to share what I wore this past weekend to the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum where H and I checked out the Takashi Murakami exhibit The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg. Having this outing be the backdrop for my first "style breakdown" post is all too fitting since Murakami collaborated with Louis Vuitton in the early 2000's. As someone who loves color (the more, the better), Murakami's judicious use of color in his art is something I admire. In fact, my affinity for color is clearly evident in this style breakdown post!

The skeleton of this outfit began with a striped midi dress and sneakers (for comfort as much as for the combination of a midi dress with sneakers, which I have been a fan of recently). A braid is my M.O. for hair, especially in the summer, and a ribbon of contrasting color added something extra. The highlight was a PVC handbag that I got on a whim and (continue to have) conflicted feelings about- its so ugly, that I love it. I added a rainbow gemstone statement ring to, in the spirit of the art exhibit, add more color. Lastly, large sunglasses are sort of my rejection of the current tiny sunglasses trend.
